Dutch elm disease, which is caused by the fungus C. ulmi spread by adult scolytid beetles, has already destroyed 70 percent of the elms in the Greenwood Forest. Another naturally ocurring fungus, P. oblonga, kills larvae of the scolytid beetle. Forest rangers plan to introduce P. oblonga into Greenwood forest in order to save the remaning mature elms.
Which of the following, if true about P. oblonga, provides the strongest evidence that the plan will succeed?
A. It is spread by a variety of birds that nest in trees that are the home of scolytid beetle larvae.
B. It has been known to lie dormant within a tree up to ten years before it begins to reproduce.
C. It spreads more slowly than C. ulmi, under most climatic conditions.
D. It does not destroy some commonly found subspecies of scolytid beetles.
E. It has been known to kill maple trees by destroying their root systems

A. If the same birds carrying P. oblonga, use to nest in the affected trees, than we have a chance that our "good fungus" will be naturally put at tha right place, probably with high efficiency;
B. Bad news: if P. oblonga initially sleeps for 10 years, than we might need another short/medium term action to save the remaining trees; Anyway no clue is provided about the dynamics of the trees loss in the past - what if those 70% were lost during the last... two centuries? Then a 10 year sleep might even be acepteable...
C. More bad news: if our "good" fungus is less reproductive than the "bad" C. ulmi guys, then there is a chence the as time passes, it will be overwhelmed by the attackants;
D. Still bad news: if some scolytid beetles are immune to our "solution", and there's a real chance that these subspecies are actually present in Greenwood, than "in most climatic conditions" our plan could be uneffective;
E. An extra fringe... drawback: while attempting to cure Dutch elm trees, it might destroy maple trees. If those are present in Greenwood (no information about that) than there's no reason to believe on our plan's future success.
:. our option should be A. It is the only argument to support the ranger's plan.
