Statement (1) doesn't guarantee a correct answer to the question. Depending on the month Pete was born, Ellen may have been born in 1957 (if in June or before) or 1958 (if in July or after). This statement results in undetermination so it is unsufficient.
Statement (2) is definitely sufficient - Ellen was surely born in the year 1975-18, that is 1957. So statment (2) alone is sufficient - we take option (B)
