On 3 sales John has received comissions of $240, $80, and $110, and he has 1 additional sale pending. If John is to receive an average (arithmetic mean) comission of exactly $150 on the 4 sales, then the 4th comission must be:
(A) $164
(B) $170
(C) $175
(D) $182
(E) $185

A simple way to solve the question is this - for the average of 4 sales comissions to be exactly $150, their sum should be 4 times $150 or $600. So the fourth comission should add what's still missing of 240+80+110 to 600. So, very easily you get $600-($430)=$170. The answer should be (B).
