DS - students scores

How many students scored less than the class average on a test?

(1) The class average was 83.
(2) Fourteen students scored above the class average.

A. Statement (1) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (2) alone is not sufficient.
B. Statement (2) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (1) alone is not sufficient.
C. BOTH statements TOGETHER are suffcient, but NEITHER statement alone is sufficient.
D. EACH statement ALONE is sufficient.
E. Statements (1) and (2) TOGETHER are NOT sufficient.

Statement (1) is insufficient, as it jaust tells us the average value - not a word about the scores histogram.

Statement (2) would be suffcient only if we knew how many students scored exactly the average value and how many did actually take the test. As we don´t know either of these, even taken together the statements are insuffcient - answer E.
